Senior Stories: Gelsey, Breaking Out of Her Shell
Gelsey is an SRLA Scholarship Winner! She is a member of the Middle College High School graduating class of 2021. SRLA taught Gelsey to get out of her comfort zone and find her voice. She has participated in SRLA since 8th grade, and she will attend USC!
As a rather timid individual, I tend to doubt my abilities and own potential. Until recently when I began running with SRLA, I gradually have been able to come out of my shell. Running with the MCHS SRLA team has helped me become better at communicating and socializing with others. After all, running a marathon alone is not a fun journey. And though the journey to running a marathon is a hard and bumpy road. Along this journey I have been able to meet other runners who have shared valuable advice and help along the way, making running the 26.2 miles a fun and worth while experience.
In a way having a supportive team and being part of a huge community of runners has boosted my morale. SRLA has helped me grow as a person and realized if I kept living an apprehensive life I would miss out on opportunities and not reach my potential. SRLA has given me the confidence and motivation to take risks and go out of my way to seek opportunities to enrich myself. Although I must admit that in taking such risks there is always the fear of failing. Failing does not erase my effort or hard work. It takes a lot of courage, which I have SRLA to thank for, to take such risks.
