Senior Stories: Yetzi, Hitting a Wall
Meet Yetzi!
Yetzi just graduated from Alliance Dr. Mohan High, and she has completed five consecutive LA Marathons with SRLA. She is a recipient of the SRLA Scholarship. Here is what Yetzi had to say about SRLA’s influence on her own life.
Not everyone follows through with the commitment and training that is necessary to complete a marathon. Only a few people are able to say that they have crossed the finish line. Luckily, I am one of them. The fact that I’ve been able to follow through with running, and completing 5 consecutive marathons is proof to myself that I am capable of anything. After every marathon and every SRLA race, I feel extremely accomplished. With the mindset to push through the pain, it has given me the certainty that I am able to get through whatever obstacle is put in front of me.
Participating in both SRLA and the LA Marathon gave me the opportunity to be surrounded by so many strong people. Running around me, ahead of me, and behind me were people who persevered. They pushed through the pain, no matter how tired they felt they kept going and didn’t stop until they reached that finish line. Knowing that people like this surround me while running is inspiring.
At times, I felt like I had “hit the wall” in school. Sometimes I felt that it would be easier to give up, to not study, to let go of the expectations I had set for myself. But when I felt this way, I remembered how I was able to surpass the same feeling of “hitting the wall” on the course. Therefore, I knew I could not hit the wall academically and give up. I continued to push myself to reach the goals I had set. SRLA and the LA Marathon taught me that commitment, dedication, and effort is necessary to get through the course. Being able to apply these concepts to my academics has helped me reach much higher goals.
