Senior Stories: Jenny – Thank you, SRLA!
I am a senior at Academia Avance. I just wanted to thank you and let you know how much SRLA has impacted my life and helped with the struggles that have came forth in my life.
Last year was my first time joining SRLA as a 230 pound junior. I didn’t think I’d be able to complete any of the races, nonetheless the marathon. That same year, I was told by my doctor if I didn’t lose weight, I would soon be diabetic. Soon after I became depressed and started going out and drinking to fill the pain I was feeling. But being in SRLA and completing the first 4 races and seeing that I actually could do it, made me want to push myself harder. My mindset changed for the best.
After completing the marathon for the first time, I was overwhelmed with emotion because I couldn’t believe that I made it this far. I felt invincible, I kept telling myself that if I could finish a marathon, then there was nothing that I couldn’t do. Being in SRLA, for a second time, makes me want to push for better times and pace. I want achieve higher goals.
I just wanted to say thank you because of SRLA I lost about 100 pounds and met goals I would have never imagined myself accomplishing. I stopped drinking and going out in order to attend races and morning practice runs the following morning. I stayed out of trouble and avoided a horrible future. I avoided shootings that would take place in parties that I had once attended, fights, and accidents that were caused by drunk drivers. I mention drunk drivers because more than half the time, the person who would drive me home was intoxicated. I’m sure [SRLA] has made a difference in other kid’s lives as well, not just mine. But I just wanted to say thank you and let you know that you are appreciated.
