Senior Stories: Giselle, Stick to It!

After completing five Marathons with Students Run LA, Giselle, a Class of 2018 graduate from Banning High School, is headed to her dream school, University of Hawai’i at Mānoa this fall. Through SRLA she learned that with determination anything is possible.

I come from a community where most kids don’t go to college. Growing up, I watched my family members go straight into the workforce but I always dreamed of going to a four-year university.

During my Freshman year of high school with SRLA I started becoming friends with seniors who were accomplishing their goals. I became friends with people who went to UCLA, HSU, CSUN, etc. They gave me advice and showed me anything is possible. After seeing this I started to set my goals high. I decided that I wanted to go to the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. I told my family and friends my goal during my sophomore year and they didn’t believe I could do it. Coincidentally this is what they said when I told them I wanted to run a marathon. Now I have ran 5 marathons and I was accepted into University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and I plan to start in Fall 2018.

SRLA taught me that it’s all about determination. Once you set your mind to something and stick to it, it honestly makes anything possible.
