Senior Stories: Jazmin, Building Confidence

Jazmin joined SRLA one year ago, and she recently completed a marathon. She is a member of City of Angel High School’s class of 2021. SRLA helped Jazmin gain more confidence and discover what she is passionate about. She is an SRLA Scholarship recipient, and will be attending Los Angeles Harbor College.

SRLA has influenced me not only to continue running but to be more confident. Joining SRLA has given me the chance to be able to see myself as a strong, confident girl which is something I’ve never been able to truly see for myself till now. Growing up as a quiet girl, I was always praised to be obedient and to follow the rules. However I also realized I wasn’t noticed when I didn’t speak up. Participating in the SRLA community service activities like voter registration, environmental awareness, toy drive, gave me the confidence to speak up on issues that I care about. I know for sure now that I will have the confidence to voice my opinion on ways to make the world a better place.

Running has given me the strength to be able to set a goal and be able to complete it.

Running has given me the strength to be able to set a goal and be able to complete it. While in SRLA my teacher and teammates influenced me to be a better runner and to believe in myself more. Even in times when I thought I didn’t have the will power or the strength to keep going my fellow teammates believed in me and they kept me reassured that I would be able to finish. SRLA taught me that the pace doesn’t matter but that commitment is WHAT COUNTS.
