Jocelyn, The Lone Wolf and the Pack

My name is Jocelyn and I’m a sophomore from Mountain View High School. I am currently running with Kranz Intermediate. I wanted to inform you about what SRLA has meant to me during this pandemic.

In this case, let me throw you a rock. I began running in elementary school. I ran with joy and with courage. Something that stood out to me was horses. Why might you ask? Well, horses are extraordinary and unique. They have been my motivation for many things in how I decide to go about life. They run freely and with passion. Such dignity and beauty each step is. That is why the motion of moving my arms and legs has brought me a peace of mind which also benefits my health. Running is an outlet I use to regroup and provides me clarity.

Whenever there is a frown on my face, I immediately think about how it feels when I run— it is my therapy to my problems.

Another fast animal that inspires me is the wolf. These furious and loyal creatures are known to travel in packs. My older brother inspired me to join SRLA which I am grateful for because my pack is my team. Being a part of this team allowed me to view them as my family. I hope you understand how essential family is. They are my guide to survival. Running is my survival. Having them both wrapped up in one is a gift that keeps giving.

This pandemic has brought me a bit down but being in SRLA has lifted my motivation to push myself. Witnessing people around me fall ill to the virus, reinforced that I am lucky to be healthy and continue to stay healthy with running. In fact, running is one of the only things I can do because of the multiple lockdowns. Though there were many times I was forced to be a “lone wolf” and practice on my own, it still drove me to do my best. To be honest, there were times where my self-doubt tried to get the best of me but I could not stay in that mental space for long even though it is easy to do so. My goal is to be a strong asset to the team when we reunite because that is what family does- we support one another even when we are not together.
