Leader Spotlight: Mr. Scruggs
Sam Scruggs, a leader at Locke High School, is passionate about Students Run LA because they deliver their mission every year– they challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon.
Q: Where are you a SRLA leader? How many years have you been with SRLA and what brought you to us?
A: I have been a leader at Locke High School for six years
Q: What is your day job?
A: I am a History teacher.
Q:What is your favorite training tip, quote, or words of advice that you share with your students?
A: You’re too young to know what you can’t do.
Q: What has been your favorite SRLA event of all time?
A: The Marathon!!!
Q: What is the best thing about SRLA in your opinion?
A: It’s an organization that delivers it’s mission statement every year.
Q: What’s something that people might be surprised to learn about you?
A: I was Foster Youth when I was a kid, which is why I am an advocate for programs like Students Run LA.
Q: Do you have a favorite teaching/mentoring moment you’d like to share?
A: Every year when the students arrive to Santa Monica High School when they realized they just finished a Marathon.
Q: What three words might your students use to describe you?
A: Motivating, caring, and no excuses.
