Thank you for your interest in Students Run LA (SRLA). We serve secondary students from grades 7 – 12 primarily within Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). We do not serve after-school programs or private schools. When it comes to new groups, much depends upon the attrition rate of our current schools. Most of our current schools choose to return for the next season leaving fewer spaces available for in-coming groups. We understand that there is a critical need for programs such as ours, but our small infrastructure, maintaining the quality of this program, and economic challenges act to keep a strict cap on our growth. We also limit the size of each group, and new groups start with no more than 10 student spaces and 3 adult Marathon Leaders (age 21 and over). For more information, please go to our FAQ page.
SRLA will be accepting applications for the 2018-2019 season from April 1, 2018 – Friday, April 27, 2018. We require the Leaders of all new groups to attend the SRLA Leader Conference at The California Endowment in Los Angeles scheduled for Tuesday, July 31, 2018, and also participate in a half-day New Group Orientation at Banning High School in Wilmington scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2018.
Please note that there is always a chance that we may not be able to accept any incoming schools this year in favor of allowing the existing groups to grow. If we are able to accept new schools, selections will be made in May and all applicants will be notified about the decision by the end of May. At this time, we do not know how many new groups will be admitted.
BECOMING A MARATHON LEADER
Each group is given three (3) Marathon Leader spaces. These Leaders will be the mentors that train the students and follow the SRLA program under the guidelines and training of SRLA coordinators and staff. The Leader roles are divided into Primary, Secondary, and Support.
The Primary Leader will take on the main responsibility and organization of the group with the assistance of the other Leaders. It is recommended that the person filling the Primary Leader position is the person to complete the online application form.
Being an SRLA Marathon Leader means that you will need to inspire your students, and to teach them the physical, mental, and emotional skills that they will need for training to complete the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. In physical terms, the goal for our students is to enable them to complete the prescribed distances in a safe and healthy manner. However, even more broadly, SRLA is about teaching students to set and achieve goals in their personal lives.
The thrill of our program is in the growth and maturation of our students. Ultimately, our success lies in our ability to help students stay in school, graduate from high school, matriculate to college or university and gain employment. SRLA Marathon Leaders are the most critical instruments in this process.
A list of SRLA Marathon Leader Expectations is available here.
To apply, please fill out and follow the instructions in this Application Form.
