Leader Spotlight: Lin Joy Hom

Lin Joy Hom is one of our longest serving leaders, one who comes back year after year ready to train and mentor a new group of students. Lin Joy is a former Star Award recipient, one who always adds sparkle to any event. She is also an invaluable provider of hot coffee for any and all early morning distribution events at SRLA headquarters, which, of course, is much appreciated! Lin Joy, and her brother Milton, make SRLA a family affair, always stepping up for extra duties before being asked. She is an example of the finest among our cadre of Leaders.

Q: Where are you a SRLA leader and what do you teach?   How many years have you been with SRLA and what brought you to us?

A: I’m a leader at John Marshall High School (my alma mater!) and I teach physical education. I have been with SRLA since 2000 and it was my brother, Milton, who cajoled me into SRLA!

Q: Do you have a favorite training tip?

A: My favorite running tip is: you gotta love running to be committed to train for a marathon. If not, you will end up loving it!!

Q: What’s your favorite SRLA event?

A: My favorite running event is the Woodbridge Half-Marathon (don’t ask why…I just love that course!).

Q: What’s the best thing about SRLA in your opinion?

A: The best thing about SRLA is seeing kids being active outdoors and committed to one common goal: completing the Los Angeles Marathon.

Q: What’s something that people might be surprised to learn about you?

A: This surprises everyone: I HATE RUNNING! PERIOD.

Q: Do you have a favorite teaching/mentoring moment you’d like to share?

A: Yes! My favorite mentoring moment was in 2012 – 2013 when I had a blind runner complete the LA Marathon!! The trials and tribulations that came with it where worth it at the end!! My runner, Lorena, was so determined to run that it made me want her to complete it just as well. It took some time to figure out some kinks to make Lorena’s run the least restrictive, but with all the help and suggestions from SRLA, WE all succeeded in her accomplishment! And with that, I THANK YOU ALL!

Q: Anything else you want to share?

A: Lastly, I would like to thank you all for a wonderful and much needed program. (It doesn’t hurt that with SRLA that I am able to scarf up anything I want and still maintain my weight!) That, and I get to meet some awesome leaders from different areas of teaching.
