WHAT IS SRLA?
Students Run LA (SRLA) is a school-based mentoring and physical fitness program for at-risk middle and high school students in the Los Angeles area. The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge these students to experience the benefits of goal setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the ASICS LA Marathon. Students who participate in SRLA learn to set and achieve goals, make new friends and become part of a team, and gain leadership skills.
WHAT IS SRLA’S SUCCESS?
Each year, SRLA bring hundreds of middle and high school students to the ASICS LA Marathon, and each year, more than 95% of them complete the entire 26.2-mile course. In March 2013, 99% of the 3184 SRLA runners completed the ASICS LA Marathon.
Each year the majority of seniors who complete the Marathon with SRLA graduate from high school. In June 2013, 99% of the 693 SRLA seniors who completed the marathon with SRLA graduated from high school and 95% of them plan to go to college or university in September 2013.
In our 24-year history, SRLA has served more than 51,000 students in the greater Los Angeles area. SRLA is fortunate to have the help of more than 500 volunteer teacher/leaders who work closely with the students to help them succeed. And these students repeatedly tell us that, after participating in SRLA, they know that they can succeed, saying, “If I can complete a marathon, I can do anything!”
HOW DO I JOIN SRLA?
Students in grades 7 through 12 can join Students Run LA at their schools. Students should inquire at the Main Office of the school to learn if there is an SRLA program there. Then the students need to contact the SRLA Leader at the school and ask to participate.
Teachers volunteer to establish SRLA at their schools. To do so, they need to contact the SRLA Office in April, to receive introductory materials. They need to respond to these materials to receive an invitation to the annual SRLA training Conference. Receipt of these invitations also depends on the availability of space in the program. New SRLA groups must receive approval from their district to participate in SRLA.
WHAT SCHOOLS ARE ELIGIBLE TO JOIN SRLA?
SRLA is currently open only to public schools in the Los Angeles area within the following boundaries:
On the West: Topanga Canyon Boulevard (with the exception of LAUSD schools that fall on the western side of Topanga)
On the South: The Pacific Ocean
On the East: The 605 Freeway to the San Gabriel River to the Ocean.
On the North: The Angeles National Forest.
WHAT DOES IT COST A STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN SRLA?
Students do not pay to participate in Students Run LA. The costs to support a student in the program are covered by the fundraising efforts of the Students Run LA program. Students Run LA is a private non-profit organization and accepts tax-deductible donations at any time. For more information, please click on the “Donate” button on this page.

- Students who finish the Marathon with SRLA tend to graduate from high school
- SRLA students report getting better grades and missing fewer days of school
- SRLA students are more likely to have plans to attend college or university after their high school graduation.
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER FOR SRLA?
SRLA needs volunteers to help at several events throughout the season. Volunteer opportunities include, but may not be limited to registration/check-in, water stations, finish line support, and refreshment/T-shirt distribution. Volunteers may participate once or on a continuous basis, and may become as involved as they choose by helping out with preparations and planning for events or simply showing up to help the day of the event.
